“Furniture is my way of expressing whatever emotions I want to express. It’s about having fun and expressing yourself. It’s not about validation.”
From the maturity in both his individual pieces and range of designs, it’s hard to believe Edmonton based designer Mike Lam founded his company a year ago, releasing his first line of furniture at IDS West last weekend. Based around the philosophy of form meeting emotion – a symphony of our eyes, our heart, our spirit – the furniture’s simple forms and curves are unique and skillfully designed and crafted. With options in walnut, white oak and purpleheart, color too adds to the emotive appeal. Clearly inspired by nature, integrating his eastern heritage with his western upbringing, despite obtaining a degree in industrial design it was other jobs that came up after graduating. Then last year, when his wife looked at him after she couldn’t find anything she wanted for their apartment he was propelled to start furniture making. Judging by the output, has not paused for breath since.
